Phlebotomist

Job Summary:

Performs phlebotomy in accordance with established National Patient Safety Goals and published protocols. Receives specimens in to the Laboratory Information System LIS accurately and timely, labels, transports, centrifuges, and aliquots specimens. Assists customer requests for laboratory information including send out tests to national reference labs. Prepares and packages specimens for transport to reference labs. Researches new send out requests by Physicians using available resources. Enters lab charges and CPT codes on all Lab Miscellaneous tests. Distributes specimens to testing section in accordance with collection priority, i.e. STAT over Routine. Faxes and distributes results as appropriate. Responsible for maintaining knowledge and deployment of policies and procedures used within the department as well as throughout the hospital to address patient questions and concerns.

Job Functions:

• Demonstrates knowledge of specimen collection containers including those send out. Assesses blood specimen adequacy for testing specifically checking for proper tube collection, and volume, i.e. QNS or wrong tube collected.
• Performs phlebotomy in accordance with established protocols for venipuncture, capillary, heel sticks, blood cultures, transfusion services, and HIVs.
• Labels all specimen containers correctly without a reported mislabel. Receives specimens correctly including all applicable tests ensuring patient demographics on specimen label match what is in the LIS. Processes STAT testing over Routine, and accurately enters information in to LIS including date, time, initials and any applicable comments. Centrifuges, labels, aliquots, pour and split specimens as required. Prepares and packages specimens for send out to reference labs in accordance with all DOT regulations for biological and etiological agents. Researches and provides information to Physicians on send out tests not found in test catalog or miscellaneous file. Posts charges and CPT codes for Lab Miscellaneous tests. Credits patient accounts as needed. Distributes Lab Miscellaneous send out results to appropriate personnel for entering in to the LIS. Faxes patient reports as needed.
• Delivers STAT specimens after receipt in to the LIS within 5 minutes, and within 10 minutes for routine troubleshoots specimen issues and missing or erroneous orders, cancels and reorders if applicable, annotates problems on Lab Occurrence Report or on line incident reports, notifying appropriate personnel and or corrects in LIS. Communicates pertinent patient information to Med Techs in order to assist with quality testing, interacts with MDs and RNs to provide and or acquire essential patient information in order to obtain quality specimens completes assigned work, projects, or other duties as requested.
• Monitors STAT and Timed orders, collections routes, uncollected lists, and or unit requests for Phlebotomy without delay to patient care, including In Labs if applicable.
• Manages patients in an Out Patient or ED setting, ensuring accuracy of patient registration, and that lab orders are in accordance with Physician script. Collects all specimens correctly and accurately, and or has knowledge of the OP or ED setting and can cover both if needed, and or performs pre-surgery phlebotomy, or morning rounds. Performs preventative maintenance and or monitors temperature checks on all applicable equipment or faxes outpatient reports as needed. Understands and executes downtime procedures appropriately and without errors.
• Maintains a neat and clean Phlebotomy cart or tray without being reminded has no expired tubes. Stocks store room with supplies as needed.

Required qualifications:

•  Phlebotomist certification
• 6 months experience drawing blood
• Open to work every Saturday or Sunday

Location: Springfield, IL

Rate: $25-$30/ HR (Based on experience)

Schedule: M-F 8:00am-8:00pm(12 hour shifts) & Every Saturday or Sunday

Long Term Temp-13weeks
 

Requirements: Needs certificate as Phlebotomist, experience in high volume/fast paced setting, specimen processing, excellent interpersonal communication skills. Must be willing to work every other weekend.
